Modimolle man accused of rape

A man (34) from Modimolle appeared in court after he allegedly raped a boy (8).

Col Malesela Ledwaba, the provincial police spokesperson, says the man was arrested after a principal from a local primary school reported to police that a Gr 1 learner from the school was living in unhygienic conditions and the school was concerned that the child was neglected.

“The child’s mother was previously confronted and advised to improve the living conditions of the child, but she did not adhere to the warning of police officers. The minor was removed from his mother’s care at the end of May and moved to a place of safety. He was later taken for medical examination because the staff was concerned that he showed symptoms of sexual abuse.”

The police conducted a forensic assessment and concluded that the child was allegedly raped on several occasions. Ledwaba says the alleged abuse took place between June 2022 and May of this year.

The suspect was apprehended and appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate Court on Thursday 22 June on charges of rape.

According to the charge sheet, the suspect has not pleaded to the charge and thus cannot be named yet.

The case is due to proceed on Wednesday 28 June.
