Three in court on kidnapping charges

A police sergeant, her husband, and an alleged accomplice were arrested in Mookgophong last week on charges of kidnapping and assault after an alleged spat over drug money.

The arrest followed after police sergeant Mokgaetji Francina Moseki (45), her 28-year-old husband, Banele Gama, and his friend, Makutu Mdutzusi (28), allegedly assaulted and kidnapped a man residing in Modimolle.

According to police reports Gama hired the man to sell dagga on his behalf. A heated argument followed on Saturday, April 8 after the trio accused the suspect of not handing over Gama’s share of the drug money. They allegedly robbed the man of his cash and assaulted him.

It is further alleged that while Gama was still with the victim, Moseki arrived at the RDP house in Modimolle in her private vehicle, dressed in her police uniform. She allegedly had petrol with her and threatened to burn or shoot the victim. Gama and Moseki then forcibly took the victim to a house in Mookgophong Extention 8 where they locked him up, Die Pos was told. He managed to escape three days later and alerted the police.

Gama was arrested on Thursday, April 20, and Moseki and Mdutzusi on Monday 24 April. The three appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 25 April on charges of kidnapping, pointing of a firearm, assault with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm, and robbery. The two men were remanded in custody while the police officer was released on a warning. They are expected to appear in court again on Friday, May 5.

According to the police the case docket has been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
