Department of Education ready for final exams

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has indicated that they are ready to administer the final National Senior Certificate examinations for the 2024 matric learners.

In a briefing to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, the department said they are ready for the examinations.

162 question papers for the 2024 October/November exams for Grade 12 learners have been approved by Umalusi, the Education Department’s independent Quality Control Council.

They are ready to be distributed to the nine provinces for printing.

KwaZulu-Natal has the largest number enrolled Grade 12 learners, at 172 213. Limpopo Province has 94 236 learners enrolled. A total of 732 488 full-time, and 136 195 part-time candidates will be writing the examinations throughout South Africa.

The Class of 2024 will be the first group that started the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) in their foundation phase in 2012.

They were also the Grade 8 group in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit South Africa. This group has faced enormous challenges in their journey to their final high school exams.

The final matric exams will run from 21 October to 27 November 2024. A total of 55 053 markers were appointed and 188 marking centres have been approved for marking the exam papers.

The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, will announce the results on Wednesday, 15 January 2025.
