Churches will no longer benefit from free land
The Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality has suspended the practice of making land available for churches at no cost.
Pastors of different denominations were informed at a meeting last week that due to the high number of requests, it has become impossible for the municipality to continue with this arrangement. According to Mayor Marlene van Staden they received more than 30 requests thus far for 2023.
“We are currently drafting a policy on the matter. We will require churches to have a bank account, their municipal accounts must be paid in full and they will have to do any rezoning at their own cost,” she said.
The land will be made available at market-related prices.
The municipality and pastors will meet again next week.
