ANC threatens with shutdown

The ANC in Modimolle has threatened “a total shutdown” should Mayor Marlene van Staden fail to respond to demands tabled at the end of a protest march on Tuesday 6 November.

The protest action was aimed at pressing home a set of demands, chief among these the provision of running water for all residents.

Addressing marchers at the premises of the local municipality, ANC Modimolle-Mookgophong sub-regional spokesperson, Sipho Mokhutsoane, demanded that she heeds to the demands of residents or face more protest action.

He cautioned that protest action should be carried out within the confines of the law.

Van Staden received and signed the memorandum, presented jointly by various community-based structures and the ANC.

Chief among the demands was that “a drop of water for one, should be a drop of water for all”.

Residents bemoaned that it was unfair for people in the Phagameng Township to go for days without water, while those who live in town had uninterrupted supplies.

Another issue which was raised in the memorandum was that informal settlements be formalized, so that people can have access to basic services such as water and electricity.

The memorandum also highlighted the issue of street lights, as one of the major concerns in the area.

It was demanded that the municipality erect street lights in all sections of the community.
