Premier at water and sanitation summit

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha presided over the provincial water and sanitation summit held at Bela-Bela’s Forever Resort on Tuesday 16 October.

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha presided over the provincial water and sanitation summit held at Bela-Bela’s Forever Resort on Tuesday 16 October.

The summit was a follow-up to the inaugural gathering hosted in Tzaneen in 2015.

During the state of the province address on 23 February 2018, the premier pronounced that the provincial government would convene the water and sanitation summit this month.

Water and Sanitation Minister Gugile Nkwinti could not deliver the keynote address due to other pressing official commitments.

A high-powered departmental delegation did attend the summit.

The summit in Bela-Bela was the culmination of similar regional water and sanitation gatherings.

In his address, Mathabatha said the summit carried the hopes of the community at large.

“The country and our province in particular is still recovering from the drought effect. This reality has worsened the situation with regards to the delivery of water to our communities.
Commercial consumers have also been severely and negatively affected by the effects of the drought,” he said.

The premier further said experts had warned the drought conditions were likely to persist, adding these were the direct consequences of global warming.
