Mayoral support for the 2024–Class

Time flies and the final National Senior Certificate exams are upon us.

The Bela-Bela Municipality has pledged its support to all Gr 12 learners who will sit for their finals from Monday, 21 October.

The Municipality’s launched its campaign: “2024 – A Year of Academic Excellence” on Tuesday, 8 October at the Multi- Purpose Hall in Extension 6, Bela-Bela. The mayor, Cllr Gloria Seleka addressed the learners, educators, councillors and other stakeholders.

She stated that the final countdown has started and matriculants must know that education is the key to success. She made it clear that learners themselves are responsible for the outcome of said exams. It is not fair to throw away 12 years of education in the final year.

In her address, the Department of Education’s (LPED) Circuit Manager for Bela-Bela, Sabina Thabete pointed out that Bela-Bela has an average pass rate of just over 70% for the third term, and this is very concerning as time is running out.

The two schools she pointed out as not performing to expectations in the trial exams are Bela-Bela High School and Raeleng Secondary School. They obtained the lowest pass rate. On the contrary, Maope High School’s learners performed best and achieved the highest pass rate in the circuit.

The learners of Hoërskool Warmbad, and Mathamela Ramaphosa High School has the poorest performance in English Home Language as a subject.

Although there are many challenges, Thabete is positive that the attitude of the learners can change their predictions and excel in their endeavours.

Bela-Bela Circuit is currently positioned 7th in the Waterberg District and this is a statistic that needs urgent attention and shortcomings must be rectified.

Cllr Gloria Seleka came dressed in a school uniform, in a show of solidarity with the learners. She encouraged learners to show up prepared and write their exams. Respect, not only for educators but for fellow learners and the people around you, is the key to a successful progression in life.

She vowed to keep a vigilant eye on learners and also promised to do spot checks at places that sell alcohol, and any student found there would be dealt with, and the proprietors would also face the full brunt of the law.

She closed by wishing all the learners well, and prayers were offered by religious leaders for the wellbeing of the learners, the community, and successful examinations.
