Boikie keeps a tight grip

Bela-Bela’s marathon and cycling star, Boikie Monareng is again creating opportunities.

The Run Boikie Run-Trust doesn’t just want to bring the sport, of tug-of-war to Bela-Bela, he also wants to introduce it to the entire Limpopo Province.

Monareng’s research showed that knowledge about, and opportunities for tug-of-war is dismally lacking throughout Limpopo.

Being a keen tug-of-war competitor himself, having been a member of the South-African u.19 team that participated in Cape Town in 1998, Monareng is planning to introduce tug-of-war spectacularly with the Run Boikie Run–Tug of War Competition that will be held at the Mandela Stadium in Bela-Bela, on Saturday, 19 October at 14:00.

Each team must have at least eight members, six males, and two females, an entry fee of R400 will be payable per team.

Monareng says that tug-of-war is more than brute strength, it is a mental mindset, and perfect for team building. He wants to promote tug-of-war as a sport, especially in the townships, and rural areas.

He is especially keen to bring tug-of-war to the schools, and by encouraging learners, and educators to promote it as a sport, he hopes to establish it as a school sport.

“Getting people from different backgrounds to unite through sport is my main goal,” says Monareng.

He also wants to encourage local business leaders to get involved with sponsorships and to enroll their corporate teams for the event. He already has major backing from SuperSpar, Bela-Bela in this regard.

The Run Boikie Run – Tug of War Competition, will be held as a fundraiser for his trip to the United States in June 2026, where he will participate in the Cross America Cycle Race. “Reaching America is my biggest dream,” he says and he will have to raise R100 000 to make it to the US.

He is planning a wheelbarrow run from Mussina to Bela-Bela. Preliminary planning for the event is from 21 October to 1 November, where he will run with a wheelbarrow and people can donate by filling the wheelbarrow with coins.

This event, however, is still in the planning phase, and he will give more details shortly. He still needs someone to sponsor a suitable wheelbarrow for the run.
