Urgent community meeting called after cable theft

Thousands of residents in Modimolle have been left without electricity on Friday, 16 February after cable thieves stole two main cables at a substation.

The entire Phagameng, F.H. Odendaal Hospital, Hospital View, Jasper, and parts of Modimolle town are affected.

Several incidents of cable theft have affected power supply the past week, with business owners complaining how the power outtage is affecting their income that is already under pressure.

The mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, Sechele Sebolai, has called an urgent community meeting for Monday, 19 February at 12:00 at the OR Tambo Hall.

“There has been an alarming rise in cable theft which needs immediate action by all stakeholders in the municipality, since it impacts negatively on the lives of residents, and disrupts economic activity in the area,” he said in a statement.

“Let’s all stand and defend our town and its people.”

He pleaded with the community to expose the perpetrators.
