Elderly woman raped in Mookgophong

Law enforcement authorities have strongly condemned gender-based violence (GBV) in the wake of a disturbing incident involving the rape of an 84-year-old woman in Limpopo.

Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe expressed profound concern over the recurring instances of such crimes within the community.

The elderly victim from Mookgophong was asleep on Wednesday 27 December, when an unknown intruder forcibly entered her residence at approximately 01:30 through a window, committing the heinous act. Subsequently, the assailant fell asleep, allowing the victim to escape and seek help from neighbours. Despite a swift response from the community, the suspect managed to flee.

Law enforcement and emergency medical services were promptly alerted, and the victim received medical treatment at a hospital. Hadebe unequivocally condemned the incident, stressing that it runs counter to the values of the community. She reaffirmed a commitment to the safety of all residents and implored anyone with information to step forward.

A case involving charges of rape and housebreaking has been initiated, and it has been transferred to the Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit for further investigation.

“Instances like this underscore the pressing need to address GBV, prompting a call for collective efforts to eradicate violence, particularly against vulnerable members of society,” a member of the community said.

Law enforcement authorities are encouraging full cooperation in ongoing investigations to ensure the swift apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrator.
