Medical specialists’ clear backlog in Waterberg

Residents in the Waterberg will have easier access to medical specialists during an outreach program by the provincial department of health.

A team of specialists, which includes pediatrics surgeons, ophthalmologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, gynecologists, orthopedic surgeons, urologists, ear, nose, and throat surgeons, obstetricians, maxillofacial surgeons, anaesthesiologists, physicians, hand and microsurgery specialists, and general surgeons will spend from Monday 20 February to Friday 3 March on clearing surgical and medical backlogs at hospitals in the Waterberg. They will also transfer their skills to local medical practitioners.

Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the Limpopo Health MEC, will lead the Rural Health Matters outreach program to benefit people from disadvantaged communities. The aim of this program is to help rural hospitals increase local access and allow patients to focus on getting better rather than getting to appointments.

The team of specialists will be stationed at the following hospitals: FH Odendaal Hospital, MDR Hospital (both in Modimolle), Bela-Bela Hospital, Mokopane Hospital, Voortrekker Hospital, George Masebe Hospital (Mokopane), Thabazimbi Hospital, Witpoort Hospital, and Lephalale Hospital.
