ANC mourns Kekana’s death

The community in Mookgophong was saddened by the death of a well-known resident, Reuben Kekana, who served as mayor from 1996 to 1999.

He was hospitalized on Monday 2 August after a stroke and remained in a hospital in Mokopane until his death on Tuesday 28 September.

Kekana was also known as Gustro in ANC circles. He was appointed by the ANC as mayor after the 1996 local government election.

He was part of many new developments in Mookgophong such as co-founder of the Mookgophong Civic Association in 1989, he was involved with the establishment of the new Makhutjisa High School in 1992 and was involved with the development of Extension 2 in 1996.

Kekana was born in Mookgophong and started his school career at Dikubu Primary School in the township.

He passed Grd 10 in Mokopane and returned home in 1987 where he took up a position at a local garage in Mookgophong.

In 1991 he was detained for his part in the first consumer boycott in Mookgophong. He became involved in various political activities and was appointed as a fulltime employee of the Civic Association in 1993.

He represented the Mookgophong communities during the 1993 negotiations that culminated in the construction of the N1-freeway that split the then Naboomspruit town in two.

He served as the ANC Chief Whip in the Mookgophong Council until 2016 and was, until his demise, the Sub-Regional Chairperson of the ANC in Mookgophong.

“He was a true servant of the people who assumed numerous positions as deployed by the ANC Organization — even when he was led by his protégés,” said Jacob Moabelo, ANC Waterberg Regional Secretary, in a media statement on Thursday 30 September.

“The ANC has lost a stalwart and servant whose life was dedicated to the total emancipation of his people.”

His bereaved wife, Trukie Dorcas Kekana, three children and a grandson were devastated by his passing.
