Hoërskool Warmbad whizz-kid Christiaan Vosloo won himself many friends in the township in Bela-Bela, when he joined an education department official for an impromptu tango after being declared overall winner of the annual Municipal School Awards.

Vosloo was awarded a total amount of R15 000 prizemoney, symbolically handed over by Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni and education circuit manager Makoma Thabethe.

After receiving his prize, Vosloo leapt onto the stage and started gyrating, triggering whistles and ululations — township-style — from learners and educators.

The circuit manager Thabethe got into the groove and joined Vosloo in the dancing, which became a sideshow from the overall proceedings in its own right.

Seven other learners of the town’s crème de la crème each received prize money of R10 000.

They are namely Thabo Mothokoa from Bela-Bela High School, Karabo Maoto from Maope High School, Otshepegile Bapela from Bathopele High School, Kiristu Froliana from Vingerkraal High School, Hendrik Aphane from Ulando Combined School,

Tebatso Mabunda of Raelelng High School, and Corné de Jonge from Hoërskool Warmbad.

The municipal spokesperson Kabelo Mosito said that the prize money was given on condition that it has to be utilized for study purposes only and the recipients must be enrolled for tertiary studies in 2020.

“This money will enable the students to pay registration fees.” he said.

No less than 13 educators from various schools were recognised for their role in shaping the top learners.
