Katlego Kwenaite tops in leadership programme

The title of King of the Camp was bestowed on a learner from the Mohlakamotala High School in Alma, for his dedication to community projects to uplift the lives of others.

Katlego Kwenaite, a Grade 11 learner at the school, was honoured with this title by the International Learnership Academy.

The academy’s objective is to, among others, encourage the youth to get involved in projects within their immediate communities.

Katlego took part in the project for the third year running.

He said it was a priority for the academy to shape leaders for the future.

“When we started in 2017, (a total of) 32 learners were selected from the Lephalale circuit. In my first year I launched a project that encouraged people to donate sanitary towels for girls in the Shongwane area. I asked everyone I knew and some of the teachers at my school also donated,” the enthusiastic youngster said.

The learners had to complete this task before moving on to the next leg of the initiative.

Only seven learners remained.

“I was selected to continue with another project to recruit volunteers for a malaria-testing project. I received the testing kits and when someone tested positive, I encouraged them to visit the department of health in Lephalale for treatment. We diagnosed many people in the community in this way,” he said.

The programme, Katlego said, is run by two American women to grow young leaders.

“Their programme really had an impact on my life, as no one has ever taught me how to be a leader,” he said.

For this year’s project, the youngster plans to grow vegetables.

Along with the latter initiative, he plans to hand out grocery packs to families in need in Seleka, outside Lephalale.

He is reaching out to sponsors to assist with this.

“I want to improve the standard of living of the people around me. I dream of one day becoming a medical doctor to be able to help those who cannot afford it, for free.”
