A 25-year-old suspect was on Friday 15 November arrested in Modimolle after allegedly being found in possession of two rhino horns.

The SAPS said in a statement the suspect was arrested during an intelligence-led joint operation codenamed “Loreal”.

The operation comprised of the Modimolle Crime Intelligence Unit, members of Modimolle Crime Prevention and the Endangered Species Unit.

The statement explained that investigators acted on a tip-off from members of the community, alerting them about a man carrying wild animal parts at a local filling station.

The police went into action, confronting and searching the suspect, who was allegedly found in possession of the two rhino horns, concealed in a plastic bag inside a bag pack.

“The horns are valued at about R210 000,” the statement explained.

The suspect was expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court again on Monday 25 November.
