Waterberg schools join MEC dialogue

Learners from schools in the Waterberg formed part of a dialogue session hosted by Limpopo MEC for Education Polly Boshielo.

The Department of Education hosted the event at Hayani Lodge in Polokwane on Friday 28 June, with 200 Representative Council of Learners (RCLs) from schools around the province in attendance.

Departmental spokesperson, Sam Makondo, said the dialogue was aimed at discussing issues that affect learners at school level on a daily basis.

The Waterberg District was represented by four learners; two from Maope Secondary School in Bela-Bela, one from Letamong High School in Mookgophong and one from Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in Mogalakwena.

The team was led by teacher liaising officer, Sello Rathokolo, from Maope High School.

The learners were divided into five groups, to discuss the roles of RCLs in making schools conducive to teaching and learning by reflecting and finding solutions on various topics.

The topics included school safety, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy, child-headed families and the roles of RCLs in improving learner performance.

Kgaugelo Nawa from Bela-Bela’s Maope Secondary School and Dorah Moabelo from Letamong High School in Mookgophong, represented their home towns.

“Through this dialogue the department will be able to identify possible solutions that will later be implemented in schools,” Makondo said.

During this learner-led engagement, the MEC was joined by Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nneke Ledwaba.
