Comrades runner hosts village Fun Run

As South Africans from all walks prepare for Youth Day, the community of Katjibane village outside Settlers will commence with the activities on Saturday, 15 June.

The Youth Day Fun Run will be hosted by well-known 13-times Comrades runner, Lucas Seleka, who was born and bred in the same village of Katjibane.

Seleka said he decided to start with only 5 km fun run and fun walk, because it was the first time that this kind of event will be held in this community.

He said the main aim was to do something that will help the youth of Katjibane to discover their hidden talents, and also fight against the burning issues such as drug and alcohol abuse.

“The majority of young people in our community are exposed to drugs and alcohol, due to lack of something better to do. There is only one sporting code here, which is soccer. If we can
introduce sporting codes such as netball, athletics and aerobics, a girl child can also find something positive to do during their spare time,” he said.

The fun run will start at the local Blue Birds Football Club Ground, and athletes will run through the bus route and then return to the sports ground for their finish.

Seleka said the event will also be used as a way to raise funds for the purchase of sanitary towels for young girls residing in the same community.

In February this year, the Modimolle-based athlete, accompanied by fellow runners donated more than 250 packs of sanitary pads at five schools in Katjibane.

To participate in the fun run/walk, adults will be required to pay a registration fee of R20, while the youth will be paying only R10.
