Mayor Marlene Van Staden said the idea was to introduce what is known as annual day of service, where the community will come together on a Saturday prior to Freedom Day for a good cause.

“We partnered with the community group Aksie Opknap to organise a day of civil action aimed at cleaning and beautifying the Modimolle graveyard,” she said.

Van Staden said about 50 people participated, among them members of Aksie Opknap, councillors, municipal workers and ordinary residents.

They all got their hands dirty, cutting long grass, trimming trees, tending to the graves, picking up litter and fixing the broken pillars.

The mayor said she was delighted to see residents from all communities, coming together and dedicating their time to clean the graveyard.

“A graveyard should be a beautiful and peaceful place to visit,” Van Staden said.

She said making this tradition fashionable will ensure that the town becomes cleaner and the environment will be preserved.

Laerskool Nylstroom, Eenheid Primary School, Susan Strjidom School and Hoërskool Nylstroom also participated in the initiative by cleaning around their schools.
