Bela-Bela Police must resolve the noise from Koppewaai

Loud music and exuberant singing sounds carry on from early in the evening into the deep hours of night and often last until after sunrise.

Jan Greeff, Bela-Bela, writes:

Dear Col. Abel Phetla, station commander of Bela-Bela police station, the regular nightly fracas in the Koppewaai informal residential area is getting out of hand. It is intolerable and is intruding on our rights.

Loud music and exuberant singing sounds carry on from early in the evening into the deep hours of night and often last until after sunrise; especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

We have called the police station four times over the past few weeks in the early hours and asked for something to be done. We have been told that other residents have also called to complain.

The police officers were sympathetic and undertook to pay attention every time, but it had no effect. It therefore appears that the police is unable to address the problem effectively.

In addition to the many elderly people in Tuintuiste, we have contact with residents in the informal settlement of Koppewaai. These people must bear a far heavier burden as they will not be able to sleep at all due to the noise level which is right next to them. It is not acceptable that a boisterous minority should be allowed to terrorize the rest of the community in this way.

Your opinion and comment on the matter will be much appreciated.
