It’s a Rum Revolution!
Who drinks rum? Pirates? Not anymore! Rum is experiencing something of a rebirth.
“Rum is definitely enjoying its moment overseas,” confirms Rowan Leibbrandt of discovery liquor merchants Truman & Orange, adding that “it’s just starting to get interesting in South Africa”.
He attributes this rise in popularity to the general surge in interest in white spirits – especially gin – which in turn boosted brown spirits. Spirits offer endless options when it comes to mixing cocktails.
He’s quick to add, though, that not any old rum will do: there’s Old Rum – either the cheap sort you mix with Coke, or the more premium variety that’s akin to a single malt. Then there’s New Rum: the Sailor Jerrys, Don Papas and Krakens which have made rum accessible to a new generation of spirit drinkers. “They usually have a fuller flavour brimming with spice, they’re enjoyed in cool urban bars where the clientele sip on whisky and gin – and they’re exploding,” Leibbrandt says.
Well-crafted, versatile, something a little different with character and an intriguing history which plays a role in capturing the market’s imagination – mere mention of the name ‘rum’ conjures images of sun-drenched sugar plantations on exotic islands. But it’s the flavour that has fans hooked. “When well-made, rum’s rich banana and vanilla character is hard to beat,” Leibbrandt enthuses.
“Small batch, handcrafted rums are also unique. They haven’t run off a production line at a thousand bottles a minute. These rums are made by real people who love what they do,” explaining the winning premise behind the brands distributed by Truman & Orange.
This revolutionary hamper includes:
- A bottle of Don Papa 7-Year Old and a 10-year Old Oak-aged Rum – a premium, small-batch rum from the island of Negros Occidental, in the Philippines
- The Kraken Black Spiced – dark, dangerous, mysterious, nefarious and undeniably delicious
- Bannerman’s Scotch Whisky – blended using more aged malt than traditional blends for a bolder, more complex flavour and a longer, smoother finish
- Blanton’s Single Barrel and Buffalo Trace Bourbon – both from the award-winning Buffalo Trace distillery
- a Julep Cup and a Buffalo Trace fleece
