Week 4

Fresh off their first room, the duos gathered at Plascon Spaces to get the brief for their next space. They’re told to decorate the spare room but there’s just one rule: It cannot be a bedroom.

Given creative freedom, each duo has a different idea for their space.

Team VISI chooses to create a multipurpose space that will function as a study and music room for their fictional creative client.

Team House and Leisure design a room that is both a walk-in wardrobe as well as a small home office.

Team Habitat continue with their wild African theme by creating a “Leopard’s Library”.

For their finishes, Team VISI get creative at Caesarstone and design custom planter boxes. Originally, they intended to mix different stones but eventually settle on just one colour.

Surprisingly, Team Habitat are much more organised with this space and choose sophisticated wall colours from Plascon for their library. Their mentor, Amanda, is back in action and immediately reigns the duo in on their loud fabric choice, guiding them towards a more chic option.

Team House and Leisure have a set plan for the room, approved by their mentor, Tiaan, but struggle somewhat to choose their window dressing, ottoman and flooring solution for their room.

Team VISI once again embark on a creative collaboration, this time with Mpho calling on his friend, photographer Mpho Mokgadi. Their vision is to capture images of Jo’burg’s architure which will become art pieces in their spare room.

After blowing their budget in the previous challenge, Team Habitat opts to save some cash and the planet by choosing to “upcycle”. They hunt down some interesting pieces in a charity second-hand shop in their own delightfully wild way.

Team VISI call on their mentor, Annemarie, to help them choose a suitable tree for their planter box, but while they’re shopping at the nursery, they’re blissfully unaware that Mpho Mokgadi is at Eye of Africa Estate with another duo.

Team House and Leisure also collaborate with Mpho for photographs that will be used as art in their spare room. Unlike Team VISI, they’ll be using photographs he’s already taken on a trip abroad. When Team VISI come over to ask for water, there’s a very tense moment as the duos and the photographer realise they’re all working together and now the battle of the collabs is on!

At the halfway mark, Team House and Leisure’s room is well on its way with the cupboards being installed. Team VISI have all their furniture ready and decide to express their creativity with a fun paint technique on one of the walls. Team Habitat, however, has a big problem: All of their tradesman are running very late and work hasn’t begun. As activity slowly picks up late in the day, could Team Habitat’s big roar about the library be nothing more than a whimper if they don’t finish in time?

Nthabi Taukobong to be a guest judge on Win A Home.

In this week’s episode of Win A Home on Afternoon Express, top South African interior designer Nthabi Taukobong of Ditau Interiors will be joining the judging panel alongside judges; Donald Nxumalo of DNX designs and Katlego Kondlo of Plascon Interiors, as a celebrity guest judge to critique the designs of this week’s challenge: the spare room.

Nthabi, is renowned for her effortlessly luxurious, yet functional interiors. She has earned a reputation for providing an exclusive design service that delivers sophisticated, liveable style to a wide range of residential and leisure clientele.

“The spare room is really an exciting space to design and I hope the designers push the envelope further than what we can expect.  I am looking for more out of the box thinking and creativity. More than just a home office or a reading room – I am curious to see what they can come up with that is still functional, comfortable and relatable in this fast paced, modern world that we live in. Simply put, I am looking for the extraordinary,” she says.

With over 20 years’ experience in the design industry, her work reflects global trends inspired by Africa, and influenced by tribal designs from around the world. The result is bespoke, yet relaxed and natural interiors with distinctly African elements such as art, décor, artefacts and furniture.

“It is in the balance of elements of nature, juxtaposed with a modern, international lifestyle that true design harmony is achieved” says Nthabi.
