What to expect in 2020

The team here at Autodealer is ready for a busy 2020, but before we get to what’s coming your way at the start of this new decade, allow us to wish you and your loved ones a happy and prosperous New Year.

We say this every year, but 2020 is perhaps one of the most exciting years yet for the local automotive scene, with a host of updates, new models and even a raft of all-electric models joining the automotive retail space. Here are a few of our highlights with regards to model introductions this year.

Alfa Romeo

The Italian automaker will be introducing an updated version of its Stelvio SUV later in 2020, while we can also expect a limited edition version of its sublime Giulia early this year.

Audi

After an exceptionally busy 2019, Audi shows no signs of letting up in 2020, with the hot RS Q8, the all-electric e-tron, updated R8 supercar, refreshed A4 range, facelifted Q7, the hotly anticipated Q3 Sportback, the all-new A6 and A7 ranges with include the RS6 and RS7 all reaching local shores this calendar year.

BMW

After a plethora of model introductions at the new annual BMW M Festival in 2019, we are still in for a busy year from the Bavarian marque with the M8 Gran Coupe, X5 and X6 M, a hybrid variant of the X5 and of course, the 2 Series Gran Coupe rounding off the 2020 releases.

Datsun

After the introduction of a slightly safer Go model, equipped with an optional CVT gearbox in 2019, Datsun will be introducing a crossover version of its popular Go city car.

Fiat

After a quiet few years in the market, we were pleased to hear that the 500X will receive an update while new versions of the evergreen 500 will also be seen this year.

Ford

With the massive revisions to its Ranger and Everest last year, along with some other model introductions in 2019, the 2020 calendar looks more relaxed for the Blue Oval, with reports of the crossover version of its Figo making a local introduction.

GWM/Haval

Having taken an impressive market share over the past two years, the reinvigorated GWM brand, which now features Haval too, is set to introduce an affordable bakkie in the form of the GWM P Series. In terms of Haval, expect a much-needed update to the H2 in 2020.

Hyundai

Joining the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Honda’s Civic Type R and the Renault Sport Megane RS will be the i30 N, a rather potent performance hatchback, and a first from the brand.

Isuzu

Isuzu fans rejoice, there will finally be a new version of the D-Max introduced to South Africa this year. Expect the 3.0-litre motor to remain, but pretty much everything else is new.

Jaguar

If you like cars and have used the internet over the past two months then you would have likely seen that the Jaguar F-Type has received a facelift, one which has caused a bit of a polarising viewpoint Jaguar’s 911 rival. We’ll reserve our judgement until the new model arrives this year.

Kia

Kia rather quietly introduced its Seltos crossover to the market at the end of 2019, with our only glimpse of the vehicle coming from a local dealership, however, said dealership also confirmed more derivatives of this new model in 2020. Along with an updated Picanto.and Rio.

Land Rover

Potentially our most anticipated vehicle of 2020 is the all-new Defender which will arrive around April of 2020 while we are also expecting the latest Discovery Sport.

Mazda

After the successful introduction of the Mazda3 in 2019, the Hiroshima-based company is set to introduce the CX-30, an SUV that slots right in between the CX-3 and CX-5.

Mercedes-Benz

After an all-out model assault in 2019, Mercedes-Benz enters 2020 with many more models on the cards. Our two highlights include the GLB and GLA compact SUVs with no word on the launch of the EQC electric car. Also expect the new GLE Coupe, the GLS and a mid-life refresh of the E-Class.

Mini

Mini will introduce its most powerful ever road car in 2020, with the JCW GP set to make its debut mid-way through 2020.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi will be entering the new decade with a new Mirage, which is set to reach SA this year, while the Xpander may also be coming our way.

Nissan

With an ageing SUV lineup, Nissan has an exciting 2020 in the works with a new Juke, new X-Trail and Qashqai all set to be introduced. Another new model from the brand is the Kicks, a crossover that is aimed at the Ford EcoSport and Renault Captur.

Opel

The reinvigorated Opel brand will introduce the new Corsa, updated Astra and new Zafira to the market.

Porsche

Lovers of electric cars rejoice, the Porsche Taycan will be coming to South Africa this year, along with the potent Cayenne GTS, 911 GT3, GTS, Turbo and of course, the 718 Cayman GT4.

Renault

The French marque is set for a busy 2020, with an updated Megane, all-new Captur, the seven-seat Triber and all-new Clio among the new entrants.

Suzuki

The Suzuki brand is on a roll lately and is looking at increasing its volume with the upcoming S-Presso, a Datsun Go and Renault Kwid rival.

Toyota

The seller of South Africa’s favourite bakkie, the Hilux, will be bringing the Corolla sedan, all-new Corolla Quest as well an updated C-HR to market in 2020.

Volkswagen

After a relatively quiet 2019, Volkswagen is well and truly back to form in 2020, with the all-new Golf 8, Golf VII GTI TCR. T-Roc, T6 Caravelle and additional variants of the T-Cross, all coming in 2020.
