Grannies Day by Ridgeway Muslim School

In conjunction with South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF), Ridgeway Muslim School entertained grannies from diverse backgrounds for a day solely dedicated to making them smile.

ANAS bin Malik RA narrates what Rasoolullha Saw said, “If a young man honours an elderly on account of his age, Allah appoints someone to honour him in his old age.” (AL Tirmidhi)

Raeesa Fakir Cassim, head co-ordinator of Grannies Day, said, “By honouring the values by which Ridgeway Muslim School (RMS) stands for we recently embarked on a project to honour the grannies in our life and take the time to show our grannies exactly what they mean to us. In conjunction with South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF), RMS entertained grannies from diverse backgrounds for a day solely dedicating to making them smile.”

The day began with the esteemed elders being collected and brought to the RMS premises where the learners welcomed each granny with a rose and a smile. The ladies were then escorted to the dining area where the RMS staff had prepared a scrumptious breakfast, nothing less than five-star, and waited on the ladies every need. Having learners around from different grades throughout the event observing, entertaining and helping their teachers was the most practical way in which RMS could inculcate in their learners the absolute importance of caring and honouring the elders, a message which went a very long way with the learners.

But the pampering had not stopped at the breakfast, in fact, that was just the beginning, the staff arranged for the ladies to be taken to the nearby Southgate Shopping Centre for the best part of any lady of ages day, shopping.

“Thanks to the open hearts of SANZAF in partnership with Fashion World, who made it possible for each of our esteemed grannies to be given a whopping R1 000 shopping voucher to spend in store. The staff of RMS again utilised this opportunity to teach their learners the value of things which sometimes are taken for granted to those more fortunate and allowed learners to go along and help each granny through her magical shopping experience,” said Cassim.

The RMS summed up the day with a beautiful statement saying: “Through life, it should never be that the elderly thank the youth but that the youth thank the elderly, for what favour we may give them today is only possible due to the life they allowed us to live through their own sacrifice. As an educator, it is never easy to teach our children morals and values but with the grannies allowing us the opportunity to host them in the manner which we did we were able to show our children first hand exactly how important our grannies are to us and again we see that the elderly to date will always educate the youth.”
