THE Johannesburg Youth Orchestra (JYO) will perform their fifth consecutive annual symphony concert on September 17 at the Great Hall at Wits University with a more traditional programme entirely consisting of a selection of Beethoven’well-known works under the baton of maestro Eddie Clayton.
With musicians from all over Soweto and Johannesburg involved, the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra is the flagship of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company. It is a non-profit organisation that has been providing more than 600 underprivileged children with music tuition and training on any orchestral and jazz instrument since 1976.
With performances at the National Art’s Festival in Grahamstown and with artists such as Elvis Blue, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Samantha Peo, Timothy Moloi, Richard Stirton and Tima Reece involved, the orchestra has become one of Gauteng’s leading youth orchestras.
One of South Africa’s most celebrated violinists with many performances of Beethoven, Bruch, Barber, Khachaturian, Mendelssohn and Mozart to her credit, Zanta Hofmeyr has been supporting the youth since 2000 when she established the Dithaga Music Project. She has also coached the string sections of the MIAGI Youth Orchestra as well as the Sinfonia Juventi.
Maciej Lacny is a member of the popular Wits Trio along with Zanta Hofmeyr and Malcom Nay, and since 2015, has taught and coached the young talent in the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company. Born and studied in Poland, he has toured and performed in Europe with the Kraców Quarter before coming to South Africa. He is currently the co-principal cellist of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra.
Peter Cartwright has become one of SA’s leading young pianists, performing across the country as well as Botswana, Zimbabwe and the USA. In 2014, Peter Cartwright performed Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra in the company’s second symphony concert.
According to conductor Eddie Clayton, audiences can expect the usual high standard of performance from the JYO, even more so with the amount of technical accuracy that Beethoven’s work usually requires.
