Art exhibition at the University of Johannesburg

An extensive body of work by Southern Africa’s foremost ceramic designers and makers will be exhibited at the UJ Art Gallery

THE faculty of art, design and architecture at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will be hosting the 2016 Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale Visual Art Exhibition.

An extensive body of work by Southern Africa’s foremost ceramic designers and makers will be exhibited at the UJ Art Gallery from November 9 to 25.

The 2016 Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale, which is held every two years, is the most prestigious event on the ceramic calendar and only the best work of ceramic artists, potters and sculptors from all regions of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia have been selected by a panel of respected judges.

The Association of Potters of Southern Africa, which later became Ceramics Southern Africa, was established in 1972 and has for forty four years provided a platform where members could learn, interact with each other and exhibit their work. Many of the members have become well known internationally as well as in this country.

Ceramic art is fast becoming sought after by collectors here and abroad – and this exhibition will give an opportunity for viewing and acquiring the best that Southern Africa has to offer.

The work will spotlight and honour a broad spectrum of work from the traditional to the contemporary. Every type of clay work will be represented including the hand-built, wheel thrown and slip cast-in materials as diverse as low fired raku, earthenware, stoneware, porcelain and bone china.

Sasha Wardell, celebrated British ceramist, a pioneer of bone china in studio ceramics, has been invited as the Award Judge – and will select the best work at the exhibition to receive the three major Corobrik cash prizes, as well as merit awards. As the guest of the Association, she will also travel around the country and Namibia giving workshops to the members and other interested persons.

Exhibition catalogues in digital format will be available and three walkabouts will be hosted on Wednesday, November 16, Saturday, November 19 and Wednesday, November 23 – all at 10:00.
