On this day in history: Titanic wins 11 Oscars

On this day in 1998, James Cameron accepted the 11th Oscar Award for blockbuster Titanic.

Director James Cameron took the stage to accept his Academy Award for Best Director for Titanic on the night of March 23, 1998.

The film was a dominating force at the Oscars that year with a record for most Oscar nominations with 14—joining 1950’s All About Eve.

Titanic starred Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet and ended up sweeping 11 categories including Best Picture.

With AliensThe Abyss and the first two Terminator movies under his belt, Cameron had already proved himself a master of the action-packed science-fiction blockbuster genre but solidified his influence on film and popular culture in 1998 with Titanic.

Titanic’s film crew constructed a 775-foot (90 percent scale) replica of the RMS Titanic and put it in a tank containing 64 million litres of water.
