JOHANNESBURG –

Oscar Released

Under the cover of darkness, Oscar Pistorius was quietly released from Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria, successfully eluding the world’s media camped outside. As Oscar prepares to see out the remainder of his five-year sentence under correctional supervision, Carte Blanche asks why his planned release in August was delayed, and what will be argued in the Appeal Court just two weeks from now. And for the first time, Reeva’s father Barry Steenkamp speaks about the ordeal that followed his daughter’s shocking death.

Student Protests

It’s been dubbed one of the biggest student protests since 1976 and, as more universities across the country join the call that “Fees must fall”, momentum is growing. In just ten days, thousands of students from many of the country’s most elite institutions have brought the corridors of learning to a standstill.  Carte Blanche asks: Is higher education a right, or a privilege for a select few?

Mandela R5 Myth

A Mandela R5 coin recently sold for R2.5-million, but experts say the actual value is no more than R5. In fact, the majority of so-called Mandela coins are worth nothing more than R5. But several eager investors have lost thousands on commemorative coins, with false promises of returns of up to 200 per cent. Are coin dealers creating a false market for coins with no value other than their actual denomination? Carte Blanche investigates.

Richard to Amber

One of the worst sources of suffering for Amber Barrett has been for her to present herself as part of the male gender into which she was born. For 42 years she’s lived as a man and even represented South Africa in the international sporting arena, all the while also dealing with drug addictions, failed marriages and suicide attempts. Carte Blanche joins Amber on a brave journey, one that has included hormonal treatments, chiseling of the Adam’s apple, realignment of the jaw and finally gender affirming surgery.

Producer: Michael Duffett

Presenter: John Webb
