Calling all uncles – your day to shine has arrived

All you uncelebrated uncles your day to shine has arrived. Just as we have Women's Day, Father's Day etc, it’s time to celebrate and honour uncles who continue to be pillars of strength in most families.

SOWETO –  Every family has an uncle and they play a leading role in providing a father figure in most single female parented families.

The idea to honour uncles was initiated by social entrepreneur Terry Mokoena, who firmly believes with the right publicity Uncles Day should be celebrated not only in South Africa but across the globe. “Uncles are part of our culture and heritage, hence we have chosen September as heritage month to honour and celebrate them. The initiative has been welcomed by various organisations. Some of us had no father figure at home as a result of absent fathers but our uncles provided that much needed paternal support. We can never thank and honour them more”, said Mokoena.

“In support of this initiative Mamphwe Communications and Ubuntu Kraal Village in Soweto will be hosting Uncle’s Day Celebration on Sunday September 14 at Ubuntu Kraal Village from 10:00 to 18:00 and we invite families and relatives to pamper their uncles or adopt one. We urge whoever will be attending to bring camp chairs and blankets,” he added. Food and drinks will be sold and entry for adults is R60, children R30 and R150 for family of four.

Joe Mafela the legendary comedian and musician, Peter Mokoena, Nkosi Albert Luthuli Foundation Soweto Choir (NALAF) Dj Moss-H and other popular artists will entertain the crowd.
