Thrilling races at South African Canoe Marathon Championships

The South African Canoe Marathon Championships races took place at Roodeplaat Dam from June 14 to 16, offering canoeists the opportunity to be selected to represent the country at upcoming international races.

The international team selected will represent the country at the International Canoe Marathon events that will take place in Metkovic, Croatia, from September 19 to 22.

There was exciting racing among the large group of entrants with good competition resulting in an exciting long weekend of racing.

Thabo Selela, a member of the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan, the first canoe club ever established in Gauteng, finished the 10km race in 19 minutes 11 seconds, coming in as the fourth U23 canoeist.

Akhona Makhoba and Asenathi Guma from the south Joburg club finished their 20km race as eighth in the U16 group in 2 hours 12 minutes while Thabo Selela was 10th in the U23 section in the 20km event clocking a time of 2 hours 49 minutes.
