United Aviation South African Derby in October

Rich in history and an equestrian calendar highlight, the four-day United Aviation South African Derby horse extravaganza will culminate on October 3 at the Kyalami Equestrian Park in Johannesburg.

While Covid-19 protocols will be strictly adhered to, the festival brings with it pop-up restaurants, entertainers and an unrivalled aviation display for all to enjoy, said showjumper and United Aviation Group MD Jonathan Wolpe.

“The derby is a show like no other, successfully combining the beauty of the horse with sheer rider brilliance. The United Aviation Group is extremely proud to be associated with South Africa’s toughest, most historic and most prestigious showjumping event.

“I have no doubt that together we’ll elevate the sport of showjumping to greater heights, new audiences and welcomed sponsors.”

Kyalami Park chairperson and twice derby winner Anne-Marie Esslinger said: “The derby is a most sought-after title on the equestrian calendar.”

The 18-obstacle, 1 000m course is only ever won by the horse and rider combination that is the fittest, most in form, calm and in-tune.

Attracting the who’s who of the fashion and riding worlds coupled with the United Aviation Group, the Kyalami Park Club will host an equestrian show not only of the absolute highest standard but quite simply the best we’ve ever had.

Commencing on September 30, the multi-disciplined derby will no doubt see tougher competition than ever before, leaving the horse-lover wanting more, said show director Heather Mpofu.

“The derby consists of competitions in dressage, showing and showjumping across all levels and age groups. It has always been a show with the best horse and rider combinations on offer on the African continent.

“To ensure that no one misses the action, the main Saturday and Sunday classes will be live-streamed. We welcome everyone to follow your favourites or find a new following because rest assured, you won’t find equestrian excellence quite like the derby.”
