WATCH: Unveiling of Soweto Giants Cup of Ages mural

It is justifiable to say the Cup of Ages mural in Soweto for the Soweto Giants was long overdue.

But once again Carling Black Label has come to the fore and unveiled the Wall of Fame at the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto to underline the importance of these two teams and what both did for soccer in the country.

“It is very important for the community to cling on the heydays of former players,” said former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe.

“Former soccer stars had memorable playing days and treasure them. It is important to underline the importance of the fans who supported us all the way. “The Cup of Ages mural was necessary as a reminder of those days and the community will have their own memories of those matches and players as well.

“This doesn’t take away from the current players and what they also bring to the game. It is all about a collective effort from Carling Black Label to once again come up with something new that can be remembered by all the players, fans, coaches and clubs.”

The community and visitors to the well-known Vilakazi Street will be able to walk down the Cup of Ages mural in Soweto and try to pinpoint those players of yesteryear who have given them so much delight when they attended a Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

“I can remember how we stood up against each other and tried to dominate your opponent,” said former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Josta Dladla.

“Play was different in those days and we played to enjoy the matches, but came out with a win. “The biggest match days were the Soweto Derby when we played Orlando Pirates and walked away with the bragging rights of the Carling Black Label Cup.”

Apart from the unveiling of the Cup of Ages mural in Soweto, Carling Black Label also initiated the Cup of Ages game, re-played on October 3 between former players of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Since its inception in 2011, the Carling Black Label Cup has remained the only match in the world that empowers football fans to take control of the game and their favourite football clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

“Carling Black Label has a unique position within the South African football landscape in that our focus is on the fan. We focus on our champion fans by amplifying their voices, ensuring fan engagement through innovation and giving our fans experiences that make them feel like champions.” said Carling Black Label brand director Arne Rust at the unveiling of the Cup of Ages mural.
