Thompson added to Southern Giant card

UP-and –coming Cruiserweight, Chris Thompson, has been added to the Southern Giant boxing tournament bill as the main undercard.

Boxing out of the Smith’s gymnasium he will add flavour to the existing bouts. He has a record of 8 wins, 2 KO’s and 2 losses and is one of the young prospects in the country in his weight division.

Apart for Thompson taking the centre stage at the Southern Giant, the tournament will also feature wheelchair boxing demonstration.

The amateurs will start at 12.30pm having a 20 fight bill and afterwards expo fights will be at the order of the day before the professional bouts commence. At 6pm. The Southern Giant will take place on November 9 at Turffontein racecourse.

It is the biggest Southern Giant has been ably put together by well-known former boxer, Anton Gilmore having an abundance of boxing talent both amateur and professional climbing into the ring.

The Southern Giant will include the first-ever All Stars African Southern Giant which is designed for the foreigners based in South Africa against a select squad of South Africans.

Also on the event are the two prodigy boys from Tyrone In’tveld and trained by Peter Armstrong of Kempton Park. The boys are mentored by their dad to become world champions as Lamenchenko’s father did for him.

The Southern Suburbs Boxing Club has added the Fight with Insight project to the club and the new fighters they have trained this year will also have their day in the ring.

The evening highlight of the day will showcase the talent from various southern gyms like Wade Groth and Julian Cook from Sugar Ray’s Gym. Willers Baloyi from Manny Fernandes will have a go and if you ever saw him fight you know he leaves it all on the line when he fights. Shaun McMinnie, who was once trained by Gilmore and fought at the Giant and is now based in Durban, will make the trip to Johannesburg to be on the pro card this year-round.

Layton Gloss, who had a great fight with Ricardo Malajika, might fight against his only other loss, Arnel Lubisi. This will be a humdinger for the event as Gloss always comes to fight.

This year it will take place at the Turffontien racecourse with Larry Weinstein from Phumelela offered Gilmore the venue as he wanted Gilmore’s send off to an event to behold. The venue has become a venue for regular boxing events.
