Holding the Fort with champion jockey

Tilbury Fort wins inaugural Gauteng G-Bets Summer Cup.

The inaugural G-Bets Summer Cup prove to be a great success having over 15 000 fans packing the Turffontein race course.

The Grade One Gauteng G-Bets Summer Cup over 2 000m was held on December 1. It marked the end of summer racing on the Highveld. Tilbury Fort with Lyle Hewitson, in the saddle, went on to win this prestigious event for the trainer, Sean Tarry. This is his fifth win in the opening seven races.

Hewitson left it till 400m to go and set up Tilbury Fort nicely as he swept through the finishing line to beat Dawn Assault in second place, while favourite Cascapedia was beaten just over three-quarters of a length into third.

Current champion jockey, Hewitson, said afterwards: “It’s special when you’ve done so much work on the horse, and he’s been so good to me. I am so fortunate and thankful to ride for such a totally professional yard.”

Trainer Tarry said: “I thought it would be tough today and would have been happy with two winners. But as the day went on I grew more confident, as you do when things go your way. Tilbury Fort likes racing fresh, so I wasn’t worried about it being his second outing after a rest.”
