New talent at soccer challenge

Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge will commence on December 1.

The 16th edition of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge will commence on December 1 at the Nike Training Centre in Klipspruit.

The tournament starts daily at 9am.

Discovery, in conjunction with the Soweto Football Association and Walter Sisulu Foundation, will host this 16th challenge edition.

The township football spectacle will keep football lovers entertained from December 1 to 29. As the hub of local football talent, the tournament has been a starting point for players such as Bafana Bafana and Bidvest Wits captain, Thulani Hlatswayo, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi and Orlando Pirates youngster, Lyle Foster. They all discovered their passion for professional football in this tournament.

“Football is a beautiful game which is a part of the fabric of South African culture. Many in our country enjoy it, and the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge adds to that excitement every year.

“Our vision is to provide these young players from disadvantaged football clubs with the opportunity to be discovered by reputable scouts,” said Discovery’s head of sponsorships and experiential marketing, Iona Maclean.

“We are looking forward to all the action that will be happening at this year’s tournament, and I encourage the public to come and support their teams in the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge,” concluded Maclean.

The tournament gives young talent much-needed exposure to tell their stories through the beautiful game.

Vilakazi is a testament to how football can impact one’s life and help to discover young people’s purpose.

“I am honoured and privileged to play my part in this year’s Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge. My personal journey with Discovery started years back when I played soccer for my local team, Meadowlands Chelsea. I used to play soccer socially as a result of tournaments like these.

“ I have fulfilled my dream of becoming a professional football player. There have been great improvements since my days of playing in the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge. I hope that sharing my journey with Discovery will have the same impact on both male and female soccer players,” said Vilakazi,

Discovery, SFA and the Walter Sisulu Foundation, invite football-loving fans to join in the festive fun and to see future football heroes in this country being discovered.
