Malaysian world cup experience for learner

MATRICULANT Khanya Makhothi from Sir John Adamson High School journey to Petrujaya for the Touch Rugby World Cup in Malaysia from August 8 until August 12 was a roller coaster ride filled with much anticipation and excitement.

She was chosen for the u-18 girls’ team at the junior inter-provincial tournament in 2017. From then on it was constant hard work for her.

Every training camp she had was not easy; she was driven to her wit’s end. However, she remembered how important this opportunity is to her career in rugby. The training and conditioning demanded much from her too in order to excel.

Khanya said: “The World Cup was an experience like no other, a memory that no one can take from me. We played three games a day during the four-day tournament in the blazing Malaysian heat and high humidity. Intense games of constant running and pushing through the pain. The third and fourth position play-off was the toughest match of my life. We fought hard against Singapore for the bronze medal through the scorching heat,” said Khanya.

TEAM: Khanya Makhothi and her coach Mickey Oosthuizen.

She extended her gratitude to everybody at Sir John Adamson High School for their support. Also thanking her coach, Mickey Oosthuizen, Mrs Oosthuizen, Touch Rugby Association, World Cup coach, friends, family and everyone else who stood by her during this exciting journey.
