World champ medals for Alberton karateka

Cobras club attended this world championship and held their own.

THE World Union of Karate-Do Federations, WUKF, recently held the seventh World Karate Championship for all ages in Dundee, Scotland from June 14 to 17.

The event was a huge success attended by over 2 000 athletes from 42 different countries. The competition was fierce and divisions were huge, but nothing stood in the way of the team members representing SASKA South Africa from the Cobras Shotokan Karate Club in Alberton.

Six members from the Cobras Club attended this world championship and they returned home with five medals in total. Medallists were senior instructor sensei Laurent Gaston-Bellegarde, two bronze medals, veteran men’s individual kata and kumite), sensei Andrea Tiedt, one silver medal, senior women’s team kumite and one bronze medal, women’s individual kumite and Zita Gouveia, one silver medal, senior women’s team kumite).

The Cobras Club and their instructors are all extremely proud of the entire team’s performance. The Cobras Shotokan Karate Club trains at Glenview Primary School on Monday and Wednesday evenings 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
