FORMER Waterstone College student Khanyisile Goba is raising the South African flag high in England as she was recently selected to participate in her school’s provincial netball competitions.

Born and raised in Ormonde, 14-year-old Khanyisile attended Waterstone College from Grade R until Grade 7 last year when she received a scholarship to study at a school in England.

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN: Khanyisile carries around her national flag to all the competitions she attends in England.

Khanyisile is a brilliant netball player who represented Gauteng several times.

Following a number of selection processes which included videos of her playing netball, athletics, gymnastics and academic entrance examinations that were written under the supervision of Waterstone College, she was awarded a scholarship to study at a girls’ boarding school in the United Kingdom.

Since her arrival in England in September last year, Khanyisile has been making strides in both netball and her academics.

TEAMWORK: Khanyisile and some of her athletics teammates in Spain.

Among her many achievements, she was nominated the player of the district netball tournament in England, while on March 21, Khanyisile was also nominated to represent her team in Spain for 10 days.

She was also selected for the Hertfordshire Satellite and County Academy screenings held on June 2 and her success meant she would be in the county team for the 2018/19 season, which is a very huge achievement for the school.

Khanyisile said she would like to thank her teachers from Waterstone College for teaching her the best skills in the sport and for seeing the best in her netball talent as well.

ON THE BALL: Khanyisile during one of her netball games in England.

“I would like to thank my teachers, teammates and the Totalnet team from Action Netball in Meyersdal, as well as my mother and family who have been my number one pillar of strength and support,” she said.

Khanyisile’s mother Hlengiwe Pmela Goba said her daughter had shown much dedication to the sport at a very young age.

ALWAYS SOUTH AFRICAN: Taking South Africa to the world, Khanyisile poses for a picture in her traditional attire in England.

“As a mother, I made sure that I attended every single match or competitions that she played and it was in 2016 that I noticed her seriousness in the game when she told me she wanted to attend the Gauteng netball trials. As from that time, we as a family we made it a point to be very supportive,” she said.

Hlengiwe advised her daughter to forego gymnastics and to focus on netball as most of the tournaments clashed.
