Central Gauteng Lions award players for efforts.

Central Gauteng Lions cricket awards.

IT was a historic awards ceremony at the Bidvest Wanderers on May 10 as The Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) revealed its new name and branding before official proceedings took place. The new name, Central Gauteng Lions, represents the overarching cricket body for the West Rand, Sedibeng and the City of Johannesburg, while ‘Lions’ and the corresponding lion’s head logo connects the brand to their franchise team – the bizhub Highveld Lions.

There was much excitement at the event, not only about the awards, but the identity of Central Gauteng Lions moving forward.

Jack Madiseng, Central Gauteng Lions president, said, “The Central Gauteng Lions awards are always a highlight at the end of a season. We are proud of the achievements of our players and all the administration involved in the success of our teams.”

Greg Fredericks, Central Gauteng Lions chief executive officer (CEO), also shared his thoughts: “It’s been a great evening, one that not only recognises individual successes but the results of the hard work by everyone involved in the progress of our organisation. It was also incredibly satisfying to witness the positive buzz around our new, unified look – a sign of great things to come.’’

In the meantime, CGL has awarded their players, clubs and schools, which falls within this perimeter, which includes club cricket up to provincial level, as well as players who made the national squads.

Glenvista Cricket Club was named by the umpires in the province as the club who throughout the season always played cricket not only on a high level but also with pride thus winning the “Fair Play Award” for the 2017/2018 season.
