Great fights at Boxing 5 tournament

Boxing 5 proofs to be a great success.

THE Boxing 5 tournament has paved the way for Southerners to show their boxing skills.

The nine-bout tournament was held on March 4 at Turffontein racecourse and proofed to be a great success.

The main bout featured up and coming youngster, Clement Kamanga from Hunter’s Gymnasium who faced Willers Baloyi from BRD Boxing Academy. The determined Kamanga got out of his corner to improve on his boxing record edging out Baloyi. The fight went the distance between two equally matched fighters. In the end, it was Kamanga who recorded his eighth straight win.

In one of the undercards for the afternoons boxing the crowds experienced excellent skills from the women’s bout scheduled between South African champion, Kholosa Nobayini and Hedda Wolmarans, who made her boxing comeback after two years on the sideline. Wolmarans emerged victorious after the fight went the distance of four rounds. This fight was awarded Fight of the Tournament after a hard-fought victory for Wolmarans.

The first bout of the tournament between Kalela Kadumbi and Jetro Shabangu was action-packed from the opening round. The fight was eventually decided on points in favour of Kadumbi.

In the second bout of the evening, Paul Mangxilana took on Thizuilandi Nemphondoni in a junior lightweight show-stopper. Paul, from the Hunter’s Gym, won the fight in the second round by way of TKO.

The third bout of the Boxing 5 tournament saw Nkensahosi Makondo from Alan Toweel Boxing Gym taking on Lucky Makhubele in a catchweight bout that was scheduled for four rounds. Makondo managed to end the fight in the first round after the opponent’s coaching staff threw in the towel. The fight was officiated by Namhla Tyulluba.

The fourth bout at the Turf was between Asiphi Ntshili and Mxolisi Nombewu in a junior featherweight contest. The fight was full of action and was brought to an end in the sixth and final.

Bout six saw Layten Gloss of Rocky’s Boxing gym take on Andrew Gumbo of Hillbrow Boxing Gym. Despite moments of brilliance from Gumbo, Gloss dominated large portions of the fights. Hard-hitting combined with a never-say-die attitude helped Gloss overcome his opponent.

A highly anticipated bout between seasoned boxer Walter Dlamini of Hunter’s Gym and Azizi Mpondia Bondia was on the cards for bout seven. The fight had a controversial result. The bout was ended in the second round when Dlamini was knocked against the ropes by his opponent.
