Young Gauteng riders show their class

Gauteng were comfortable overall winners at the national championships.

LEE-Ann Hayes, a learner at Waterstone Primary and Justin Smit, a learner from St Declan’s School for Boys, were crowned u-17 pairs champions at the SA Mounted Games on December 17.

In addition, Leigh-Ann placed second in her individual class and Justin placed third in his class.

The individual and pairs championships were hosted by the Gauteng Mounted Games Association and held at Southern Riding Centre from December 13 to 17.

Other colour holders Keenan Cronin (Orchards Academy) and Skyler MacFarlane (Drie Riviere Hoërskool) placed fourth in their pairs event, while Keenan placed second in his individual class and Skyler fourth in her class.

Riders came from as far afield as the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Limpopo to compete in the national championships. A lone German rider completed the line-up.

Gauteng province had a comfortable overall win, followed by KwaZulu-Natal in second place, Western Cape in third, North West in fourth, Limpopo in fifth and Germany in sixth place.

Lee-Ann Hayes, Justin Smit, Keenan Cronin and Skyler MacFarlane received their Gauteng provincial certificates at the final dinner held at The Art Farm in Alewynspoort on December 17.

The first Gauteng competition of 2018 takes place at Penbritte Equestrian Centre on January 20 and 21. These will also be selection shows.
