Young boxers in the spotlight

The junior welterweight bout will take place over eight rounds.

BOXING will take another step in the rejuvenation of development in the sport when the Boxing 5 tournament is staged on December 3.

The nine-bout fighting bill will take place at Turffontein racecourse starting at 1pm.

Presented by Unleashed Sport Events in partnership with Boxing 5, ClickaBet, Cell C and Phumelela, the tournament will feature a bumper bill of up-and-coming young boxers.

Seasoned trainer Manny Fernandes has joined hands with former boxer Lionel Hunter and Rocky Weinstein to promote mainly development boxing in order to provide more bouts for these boxers.

The main bout will feature Clement Kamanga, who will fight out of the Unleashed gymnasium with Lionel Hunter as trainer, and Raymond Kapula from the BRD Boxing Academy with Manny Fernandes in the corner. The junior welterweight bout will take place over eight rounds.

The undercard of the event will see Junior Assoya from Rocky’s gymnasium taking on Willis Baloyi from BRD Academy, also over eight rounds, in the junior welterweight division.

Former South African welterweight champion Shaun Ness will appear in a six-rounder against Eric Mukadi from the BRD gym. Rocky’s gymnasium youngster Layten Gloss will take a shot against Lesego Sekao over four rounds in the junior bantamweight division.

Paul Manxilana from the Unleashed gym will climb in the ring again Zimisele Magagula over six rounds in the featherweight division. The experienced Walter Dlamini, now fighting out of the Unleashed gym, will take on Dido Mukhanya over six rounds in the middleweight division.

The first three opening bouts will belong to: Siphamandla Mkhambaphi and Gift Baaname, four rounds flyweight division; Siya Mabena (Unleashed gym) vs Jules Batale, four rounds junior welterweight division; and Layolo Magenuke vs Bongani Buthi, six rounds junior featherweight division.
