‘People’s race’ returns to Turffontein

R2-million Sansui Summer Cup over 2 000m returns on Saturday.

TURFFONTEIN racecourse will be a hive of activity when the grand finale of the summer racing season takes place on November 25.

One of Joburg’s biggest horseracing events, the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup over 2 000m, will return on Saturday and the punters have already been placing serious bets on their favourites.

Abashiri, trained by Mike and Adam Azzie and one of the favourites to the win the Cup, has drawn 19 and will have its work cut out with a full field on race day. Another favourite, Hermoso Mundo, was also drawn wide at 18 and like Abashiri will have plenty of ground to make up.

Hermoso Mundo trainer Weichong Marwing was unfazed, however, saying: “Number 18 draw is not a disaster for Hermoso Mundo because he’s going to come from behind anyway. The long straight will suit him.”

Mawing has has two other horses in the race: Mac de Lago, drawn at No. 7, and Let It Rain, who pulled the No. 15 stall. Mac de Lago will be ridden by Marco van Rensburg, who said: “Seven is my lucky number – I’m very happy with the draw.”

Mike de Kock-trained Orchid Island was drawn at No. 10, and with champion jockey Anthony Delpech guiding her through the midfield will have a great shot at the finishing line.

Geoff Woodruff-trained Pagoda will jump from the No. 11 stall, with Master Switch out wide at No. 16 and Woodruff’s other runner, Banner Hill, at No. 13.

Trainer Johan Janse van Rensburg was satisfied after Crowd Pleaser drew at No. 6, in-form Girl On The Run drew at No. 5, New Predator drew at No. 9, and jockey Gavin Lerena’s Brazuca drew at No. 14.

Sean Tarry-trained duo French Navy and Social Order are at No. 17 and No. 12 respectively. Liege and Tilbury Fort drew stalls No. 2 and 4.

Wind Chill has pole position, while Joe Soma’s horse Master Sabina will start from No. 8, giving them the perfect platform for taking top honours on race day.

Coral Fever, from the Robbie Sage yard, will start from the widest stall of all.

The remaining horse, Fort Ember from the in-form stable of Paul Peter, has drawn at No. 3.

Racegoers can start arriving at Turffontein racecourse from 11am. The venue will be transformed into a world-class carnival, complete with a Ferris wheel, entertainment, great food and drinks, fashion shows, and exceptional musical entertainment.

A highlight of the day will be the inaugural half-time show. Taking place just before the main race, to announce it in the grandest way possible, the 20-minute extravaganza will feature an impressive line-up of drum majorettes, a massive field band, a choir and incredible dancers, headlined by local musical phenomenon Mi Casa.
