THE Hillbillies Golden Oldies Rugby side will be hosting its annual Hillbillies Golden Oldies Rugby Festival at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre on November 4 with 14 teams set to play in a day of fixtures.
The Hillbillies is a group of veteran rugby players who have all come together to share in the spirit of Golden Oldies Rugby and its motto is: ‘Fun, Friendship and Fraternity’. Founded in mid-2008, The Hillbillies have grown to become one of South Africa’s best Golden Oldies Rugby sides with an active membership of over 50 players.
The team was originally formed as The Hill High School Old Boys’ side that was meant to play a once-off game against The South Rand Rogues, who were a dominant force in Golden Oldies Rugby back then. The Hillbillies’ home ground of choice was the Union Rugby Club and is still the proud home to the team today.
Due to overwhelming interest and support for The Hillbillies, it was decided that the side would become affiliated to The Golden Oldies Fraternity and enter as competitors in 2008 and 2009.
During late 2009 and early 2010, a few of the original Hillbillies players decided to hang up their boots and the side needed more players rather urgently. At the same time there were challenges at the South Rand Rogues that caused them to relocate from the Union Rugby Club to the Alberton Rugby Club. Over time, the South Rand Rogues members began to filter into The Hillbillies team and have proven to be assets to the club.
Annual Hillbillies Golden Oldies Rugby Festival will be held from 8am till late and food and refreshments will be on sale.
