Victory ride raises much-needed funds

Rand Water Race for Victory a success story.

IF ever there was a lonely rider doing it for his team, then the victory that Brendon Davids picked up at the Rand Water Race for Victory was a perfect win.

The Rand Water Race for Victory was held on the outskirts of Alberton near Daleside on the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve route, on September 10.

Rand Water Board and the various supporting sponsors once again committed themselves to supporting the Frances Vorwerg School for disabled children through their generous sponsorship of this major event.

Brendon Davids from team RoadCover won the elite men’s ride over 150km in a time of 3:34:50 on Sunday which saw him coming in well in front of the rest of the field.

Davids was en route to a perfect finish after he dispensed of the group just as they started to climb the Suikerbosrand Mountains. The day was not without any incidents as he described after the race, “Our team was riding together struggling with the cross winds on the open road just as we entered Suikerbosrand. In front was Nolan (Hoffman) and we knew that he was a strong climber. Unfortunately, some of us and Nolan were clipped by one of the media motorcycles’ mirrors and he had a nasty fall. I just managed to hold myself up. When I saw that he was down, I knew this was my chance – not that one likes the sight of a cycler going down. I gave it my all and at the end was way in front to take the win for the team that worked so hard,” said Davids.

He contributes this win to his team and said that they were a small team as some of the other cyclists had to race in Mauritius. Davids said that Clint Hendricks, Mornay van Heerden and Bradley Potgieter played their part in the 150km road race. Potgieter also grabbed the last podium place after finishing third.

Davids said he would soon head ‘down under’ to race for a number of teams in the hope of securing a contract for next year.

“I’ll be heading overseas shortly, so it’s good for my motivation before I go and good motivation for the guys before they head to Nelspruit this weekend.”
