Southern paddler selected for national team

Alex Masina selected to the SA Protea team.

ALEX Masina from Turffontein, Forest Hill High school, learned to paddle at Johannesburg Canoe Club when he was very young and has increasingly become more successful over the years. As a young development child from a less privileged background, the club nurtured and promoted him, giving him opportunities to prove himself, which he has done.

He has been placed on an advanced development stream and sponsored in his education through the national system and has been relocated to KZN to be coached by South Africa’s top coaches and to train and compete with the best hand-picked crews in the junior field of South Africa.

At the SA Canoe marathon championship, which took place in Pietermaritzburg on August 12 and 13, he has once again lifted himself to a higher plane, winning the u-18 race, proving himself the top junior canoeist in South Africa and ensuring his place in the South African Marathon Protea team to compete at the ICF World Canoe Marathon championship which will take place in Pietermaritzburg on September 9 and 10.

Thanks to Johannesburg Canoe Club, committee, coaches, paddlers and support structures, Masina from the South, is well on his way to a great success story in the sport.

TOP PADDLER: Alex Masina at the SA Marathon Canoe championship, top u-18 junior in South Africa, was selected to the SA Protea team to compete at the ICF World championship race in September.
