UJ stun Tuks to earn vital three points

UJ bags vital points in Varsity soccer.

Visitors UJ managed to keep out a strong Tuks attack, while bagging a goal of their own to defeat Tuks 1-0 at the Tuks Stadium on August 3.

Tuks came out guns blazing in the first half, hoping to put the hurt of last week’s draw behind them, after they were seconds away from earning a full three points on the road against TUT.

Richard Moremi, Jeremiah Nkwana and Frank Mpedi were linking up well as Tuks looked to grab an early lead. But UJ’s defence held strong. They looked well organised and a counter attack seemed their likely opportunity to score.

Somewhat against the run of play, UJ earned them a penalty after a Tuks foul in the box. Tebogo Mandyu stepped up to slot home and give his side the lead. It went into the break all square.

The second half began much like the first, with Tuks coming out strongly on the attack. Jeremiah Nkwana had a number of free kick opportunities thanks to a number of fouls by UJ just outside the box, but UJ’s shot-stopper Damaine van der Walt was in the form of his life, equal to all Nkwana’s efforts.

The match became a bit scrappy as both UJ’s Wade Rowe and Tuks’ Simbongile Njokwe were issued yellow cards.

UJ held strong as Dane Fortuin organised his troops and the clean sheet ensured a full three points as UJ won 1-0.
