Gary Player honoured at awards

Gary Player was honoured at the Discovery Sport Industry Awards.

Gary Player was honoured at the Discovery Sport Industry Awards on May 18, where he walked away with the Sportsperson’s Lifetime Community award presented by Deloitte.

The award serves to recognise a former sportsperson who has made a sustained positive contribution to community and/or development via their actions and endeavours over an extended period of time. The recognition of Player comes after his illustrious career in golf, accumulating over nine major championships, and at the age of 29 becoming the third golfer in history to win the Career Grand Slam, together with his efforts through the Gary Player Foundation.

Founded in 1983, the Foundation was set up to provide quality education, nutrition, medical care and extra-curricular activities to the less fortunate children living in rural areas of South Africa. Today, the Gary Player Foundation, in conjunction with Black Knight International, manage and run a series of six prestigious golf events staged in the USA, Asia, Europe and South Africa. Through these events, the Foundation has managed to raise more than $100-m for charities globally.

Gary Player said, “I have found that the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others does not thrust itself upon us, but we do not need to look hard for it, either. When you spot the chance to give back to the world, act on it. You will have made life better – for others and for yourself.”

“When I die, I will create another foundation in heaven.”

Sgwili Gumede, chairman of the sport industry group said, “Gary Player is a remarkable sportsperson who has tirelessly contributed to the development of the sport industry internationally. Over and above this, through his foundation he has also touched and changed many lives for the better throughout the world. It is on this basis that he is truly deserving of this accolade. It is a true honour to recognise him with this coveted award.”
