Muhammad Mia performs at World Martial Arts championship.

MUHAMMAD Mia, a Grade Nine learner from St Martins School, held his own during the World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships, which was held in Costa Del Sol in Spain recently.

Some 90 countries entered their martial arts students to compete in this prestigious event.

Muhammad competed in the different categories in his age group and achieved a silver medal in his form’s (kata) division, plus a silver medal in his kumite division. He achieved a bronze medal in his points sparring (fighting) division.

He then subsequently arrived back in South Africa and competed in the World Martial Arts Games on October 14, 15 and 16, which was held at the Coca Cola Dome. At that championship participants from all continents showed their class.

Muhammad held his own at Nortrhgate and once again he achieved a gold medal for his kumite division, plus a gold medal for his points sparring (fighting) division. He also achieved a silver medal in his form’s (kata) division and a silver medal in his team sparring division.

Muhammad was also requested to perform his forms for a live TV broadcast on Saturday October 15 – for the opening ceremony of the Last Fighter Standing event, hosted by Michael Jai White and attended by many other international celebrities.

Muhammad started martial arts as an 18 month old baby and really became passionate about it as he grew older. Over the years he’s been a National Grand Champion on numerous occasions for different formats of karate and kickboxing.
