Hoffman wins gruelling Race For Victory

Record entry received for Rand water Race For Victory.

NOLAN Hoffman won the 21st edition of the Rand Water Race For Victory, in spectacular fashion.

The Race for Victory, organised and staged by Frances Vorwerg school was held on Sunday September 11 at Daleside Meyerton’s Boswell Wilkie Circus. A record entry for the Race For Victory of more than 2 100 cyclists were received when the school celebrated the 21st anniversary.

The drama started earlier the morning when the Elite 154km men’s race was called off due to gale winds on the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve mountain and the Elite riders had to start with the 110km riders.

But this all played into the hands of one of the best sprinters on the road, Nolan Hoffman, as he and his team mates from Telkom, just had to hold the rest of the chasing teams until the finishing line to take the much coveted Race For Victory title.

“This is my first win in this race and I am very delightful that I could win the 21st race which means a lot for me,” said Hoffman,” I am a sprinter so I could outrace the rest of the chasing group as well as the first breaking group to the finishing line.”

Hoffman pipped the breaking group of riders some 50m to go to the finishing line to clinch the first place just in front of the nose of Calvin Beneke and in third place Eddie van Heerden. He finished the race in a time of 2:32:37.

“We manage to built up a small gap between the chasing group and keep it there until the end. My team mates help me throughout the race and we knew that we have a chance this year to take the title.” He said, ”It was a good decision of the race organisers to cancel the part in the mountain as the strong winds is very dangerous if you have to ride through the 54km pass. But this played into my hands and I knew that I could take the title.”
