Athletes brave the cold weather

CGA second last meeting for the season.

THE second last cross-country meeting was held on July 16 at Dorothy Nyembe Park in Soweto where Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) and athletes turned out to test their running abilities in the cold weather.

Compliments on a great choice of venue was a common sentiment expressed by athletes on the day. It was a wonderful change from the previous venue the hosting club Take It Easy utilised in past years. It was a challenging course that represented the true meaning of cross-country.

As CGA heads towards the end of the season, the province is more adamant that this year’s provincials will be on fire. The likes of Cornelia Joubert (Boxer AC) and Keneilwe Sesing (KPMG RC) who have been consistent in their performances, and Namakwa Nkhasi (Nedbank RC) will give the brothers a run for their money.

This week’s 10km event results for the first three finishers are:

Men

1. Namakwa Nkhasi – Nedbank RC – 30:48

2. Xolisa Tyali – Nedbank RC- 31:49

3. Lucky Mohale – Boxer AC – 32:45

Women

1. Cornelia Joubert – Boxer AC – 36:47

2. Keneilwe Sesing – KPMG RC – 38:39

With only a few weeks to go to provincial championship, which will be held on August 13 at Boksburg Stadium and one more league due to take place on July 30 at Alberton Dam, the cross-country commission is confidently ready for the South African championship at the beginning of September in George.
